a few days in Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is a gorgeous little place. Narrow streets of colonial buildings surround the zocalo and the Cathedral of Oaxaca a Baroque beauty begun in 1525 and never completed. We turned a corner and saw a discreet sign advertsing a hotel. Formerly the convent of the Santa Lucia nuns the Hostal CasAntica, is our casa for a few days.

We found a vegetarian restaurant half a block from the hotel. Could it get more perfecto? Yes it could and it did. We finished a lovely repast of Chicken Mole for Tommy and a homemade soy and espinaca burger for me and stepped outside as a street art installation was beginning. Peter Schräder, "was moved by the political situation in Mexico to create his Concierto de Claxofono- 'devolver de voz de Oaxaca' "

A poem turned into morse code and played back on large drums, car horns, and computer controlled claxon, plastic balls, people handing out hundreds of ear plugs, and a movie screen sized photo projection of the 2006 teachers riots played on a building.

This morning we got to the zocalo in time for the Dia de Bandera celebration- Flag Day. Military pomp and school kids with flags, drum and bugle corps marching around looking and sounding important.

It's great to be back in a city again.
